An animal services officer in Virginia came to the rescue of a red fox that spent several hours stuck between the wooden slats of a fence.

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter said on social media that an officer responded to a report from a concerned resident about a fox with the middle of its body stuck in a wooden fence.

The shelter said the fox is believed to have been stuck for several hours before the rescuer arrived.

“Our officers safely freed the fox and consulted with professional rehabilitators to address the injuries to their rear legs,” the post said.

The shelter said encounters between humans and foxes are on the rise in the area.

“As human development expands, red foxes have adapted to live in suburban and even urban environments,” the post said. “This increases your likelihood of getting a glimpse of our red-furred neighbors.”

“They are most active at dawn and dusk, but you may see them around during the day- especially in winter when food sources are scarce. Typically, they are happy to go about their lives with minimal human interaction.”
