Firefighters in Arizona said a large dog was lucky to evade serious injury when it was run over by a car and got one of its paws partially stuck under a tire.

The Tucson Fire Department said Engine 16’s crew was headed back to the station from an unrelated call on Christmas Eve when they were flagged down by a group of several drivers.

“A dog had been running down the roadway and jumped in front of a car. The driver slammed on the brakes and stopped, but the dog’s paw became partially stuck under the rear tire,” the department said on social media.

The crew blocked traffic on the busy, wet roadway and set about working to free the dog from underneath the car.

“The crew placed the car in neutral and carefully rolled it forward enough to free the pup, who was then turned over to an animal control officer,” the post said.

The department said the dog was “scared and trembling” but appeared to have evaded any serious injuries.

Officials are now attempting to locate the animal’s owner and return it home.

The fire department said it was the second time in a single week that a trapped dog has been rescued from under a car.
