A British rowing team competing in an Atlantic Ocean endurance challenge stopped to rescue a large sea turtle they found entangled in a discarded net.
The members of the Hampshire-based Call to Earth team — John Hammond, Stacey Rivers and Emma Wolstenholme — said they were about 895 miles into their more than 3,000-mile Atlantic crossing as part of the World’s Toughest Row when they spotted the turtle entangled in marine debris.
The posted a video to Instagram showing how they paused their journey to free the large turtle and send it on its way.
“We’re rowing the Atlantic in support of Blue Marine Foundation and The Ocean Cleanup, to protect the very oceans that carry us forward,” the post said. “This is more than a race, it’s a reminder that the ocean needs us.”
