Season 2 of Apple TV’s police drama, Criminal Record, marked a reunion for former The Musketeers co-stars Peter Capaldi and Luca Pasqualino.
Capaldi played the scheming Cardinal Richelieu, while Pasqualino portrayed the hero D’Artagnan on the 17th-century-set adventure series, which aired from 2014 to 2016.
On Criminal Record, they play Daniel Hegarty and J.P. Brownlee, contemporary police detectives investigating a homicide at a London protest.
“All of the actors we have are fabulous. We’re very, very lucky. Great actors. But Luca was a delight because he’s so charming and so great to have around,” Capaldi told UPI in a recent Zoom interview.
“But, also, I absolutely believe him in this role. He looks like a guy who has just been a cop and has worked his way up to this place, but he brings a kind of charm that Hegarty doesn’t have. Because Hegarty is getting on a bit in years, he needs someone. Hegarty just goes, ‘Go, get that guy!’ And Luca goes off to get him.”
Also collaborating on the case is June Lenker (Cush Jumbo,) a detective with deep misgivings about the methods Hegarty uses to bring alleged law-breakers to justice.
“If you’ve seen Season 1, you know it was a fairly brutal end, in terms of our relationship,” Capaldi said.
“I think the big change in this season is that, previously, we have to deal with digging into the past,” he explained. “This is a live case that needs to be dealt with because of an ongoing threat.”
Hegarty finds himself in a position where he needs Lenker.
“Although he doesn’t like her, he’s always had a great respect for her. He sees her qualities as a detective,” Capaldi said.
“He sees her very clearly and knows how good she is, which is why he doesn’t want her as an enemy. But in this instance, he has to bring her onside. So, that’s difficult for him, but he can do it because he’s a grown up.”
