92-year-old grandmother wins 'Tekken 8' tournament in Japan

A 92-year-old Japanese grandmother showed off her skills at popular video game Tekken 8 and was named the winner of an esports tournament.

The Care eSports Association, an organization specializing in video game tournaments for senior citizens, announced its 12th biannual tournament has completed, with Hisako Sakai, 92, taking the top spot.

The tournament featured eight senior citizens, ranging in age from 73 to 95, facing off in virtually-held one-on-one Tekken 8 match-ups.

Sakai defeated 74-year-old Goro Sugiyama in the finals to take the top spot in the tournament, which was livestreamed on Care eSports’ YouTube channel with live commentary.

Sakai played as Claudio in the final round, while Sugiyama selected Lili as his character.

Care eSports held its first tournament in 2019 and now holds two tournaments a year for players who win preliminary matches in Mie, Aichi and Gifu prefectures. The organization said it is hoping to hold a fully-national tournament in the near future.
