Taiwan zoo's escaped anteater found after a week on the loose

An 11-year-old lesser anteater that escaped from the Taipei Zoo in Taiwan was safely located and returned to the facility one week later.

The white and tan animal, named Blackie, was found to have escaped from her enclosure on the evening of May 18, sparking a days-long search of the surrounding area.

A zoo employee spotted Blackie crossing a service road encircling the zoo. The area is not open to the public.

The employee followed the anteater, who made her way to the solar energy clock in front of the zoo’s tropical rain forest area.

Nearby zookeepers were summoned to help corral Blackie, who reportedly put up a fight during the capture and scratched one employee’s hand before being secured.

“Initial checks indicate that Blackie is healthy and energetic with no major issues,” the zoo said on social media. “Further, more detailed health checks will be conducted to ensure her safety during her solo trip.”
