La Vie en Rose Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard says she was eager to join The Morning Show for Season 4 because she is a massive fan of the inside-television drama and how it empowers women in the wake of the MeToo movement.

“It’s very important to study how the media works,” the 50-year-old French actress told UPI in a recent Zoom interview, emphasizing how journalism is a critical tool for holding people accountable for their actions.

“It’s a very, very powerful thing to deliver the news and how you can manipulate the news or how you can be driven to seek the truth, especially today when the big medias are owned by big companies and very powerful people who want to use the medias for their own interest and not necessarily for sharing what’s happening in the world and what we should know and how we should question it.”

The Apple TV+ series follows the predominantly female staff of a New York television network that recently merged with another company. It co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Nicole Beharie and Jon Hamm.

Cotillard’s Celine is a new addition as the board president of the newly formed network UBN this season.

“Celine is a very complex character because she has to prove herself,” the actress said.

“That sometimes leads her to follow her own interest and not the interest of the truth, but, also, she’s very human and hard-driven,” she added. “She’s kind of still searching for the right place for her.”

Although her ambition puts Celine directly in the path of the network’s news anchor and producer Alex (Aniston), Cotillard said she thinks Celine actually loves her rival.

“She’s kind of struggling between the power that she has and the desire of more power to prove herself in the eyes of her family and the admiration that she has for Alex, but, also, the fact that Alex is such a smart and authentic person sometimes gets in Celine’s way of achieving what she wants to achieve,” she added.

“But I think she has a lot of respect for [Alex] and the fact that she got to this powerful place always being kind of true to herself.”
