Ed, Eli Stone and Arrow-verse alum Tom Cavanagh says Jack, the small-town police detective he plays in You’re Killing Me, isn’t initially thrilled to have two amateur sleuths crash his high-profile murder investigation.
Secrets bubble to the surface, but will they reveal? The journey ends with a finale you won't see coming.

The show wrapped up its first season on Acorn TV Monday. It follows Brooke Shields’ mystery writer Allie as she teams up with 20-something-year-old, true-crime pod-caster Andi (Amalia Williamson) to figure out who killed another author during a book convention in a small New England town.
Cavanagh, 62, plays Jack, a transplant from the Boston police department, who is officially in charge of the case, but keeps crossing paths with Allie and Andi.
“I like that dynamic of a slight fish out of water. Everyone knows each other. You’re at a disadvantage, or playing catch up, but it creates this underlying tension and conflict, which, I think, is good,” Cavanagh told UPI in a recent Zoom interview.
“Brooke is a big deal in a small town. She’s an accomplished crime writer and she comes out of the gate like: ‘I know who you are, you big city cop coming into this small town. I write people like you.’ And she’s just dressing him down and evaluating him, shooting arrows close to the bull’s eye and he ends up being a worthy opponent.”
To prepare for the role he consulted his brother, a real-life prosecutor in Ottawa.
“He handles giant murder cases. He deals with police all the time and was a resource to go: ‘Would I do this? Would I say this?’ I can text him and get a text back in, like, 27 seconds. ‘You wouldn’t do this, you’d do that,'” the actor said.
“He’s no-nonsense and sharp and he’s probably the smartest person I know and, so, having him in my corner has been invaluable.”
In addition to working with Shields, Cavanagh said that another aspect about the project that appealed to him was the show’s authentic tone, particularly as it pertains to the flirtation between Allie and Jack.
“They are adults and they do understand how the world works and they’re dealing with their attraction, but, also, there’s people dropping dead and they’re dealing with that, too,” he explained.
“I like to give the writers a lot of credit for threading those needles and full credit to Brooke, who is a producer on the show, who knows all the arcs and the lines. She’s doing some real heavy lifting, as is Amalia Williamson,” he added.
“Some people feel like there’s a risk to having comedy and life-and-death stakes in the same world. I don’t. I love it and I like the fact that I’m with people who feel similarly.”
You’re Killing Me has already been renewed for a second season.
