Animal rescuers in Ontario are trying to find the owner of a large exotic snake found wandering loose in Cambridge.

The Cambridge & District Humane Society said the reptile was spotted Sunday on Lena Crescent and was initially thought to be a native species.

The serpent was later identified as a desert kingsnake, native to the southwestern United States.

The snake, which was found with minor injuries, is being held at the Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge in Nanticoke while it recovers and officials attempt to find its owner.

Officials said the snake is friendly and accustomed to humans, leading them to suspect it is an escaped pet and was not neglected or abandoned.

The Humane Society is now attempting to find the animal’s owner.
