Monkey briefly escapes enclosure at Mexican zoo

A city in Yucatan, Mexico, said a capuchin monkey briefly escaped from a local zoo while its enclosure was being cleaned.

The Mérida City Council confirmed the monkey escaped about 7:40 a.m. Sunday while the Centenario Zoo’s primate enclosure was undergoing routine cleaning.

The zoo activated security protocols and the facility was locked down while zookeepers worked to track down and contain the monkey. The escape occurred before the zoo opened for the day, so no guests were present at the time.

The primate was tranquilized and recaptured about 10:30 a.m., officials said. The monkey was not injured.

The zoo opened to the public and normal operations resumed.
