A home security camera in California captured the moment a neighbor’s cat successfully fought off a coyote and fled up a nearby tree.
Pico Rivera resident Debbie Beltran said she was at work on Friday when a neighbor sent her security camera footage of a confrontation between a cat and a coyote.
“I was in shock,” Beltran told KTLA-TV. “It took me a while to see — is that our cat or somebody else’s? And no, it’s our cat.”
The video shows the cat, named Mama, swipe at the coyote with her paw and successfully keep it at bay for long enough to flee up a tree.
“Coyotes usually come out when the sun goes down,” Beltran said. “So to see this happen in broad daylight, that was shocking.”
She said it was less shocking to see Mama, who has been with the family for about 5 years and is believed to be about 10 years old, holding her own.
“She’s always been feisty, this type of cat, and has got into fights before so it doesn’t surprise me,” Beltran told KABC-TV.
Beltran said her family, who previously lost another cat to a coyote attack last year, has been giving Mama some extra attention since the incident.
