Animal control officers in San Francisco came to the rescue of a juvenile coyote trapped for several days in the walled backyard of a home situated atop a steep hill.

Animal Care & Control San Francisco said on social media that an officer was contacted Sunday morning by a resident who was out of town on vacation and had spotted the backyard visitor on her home security cameras.

“Her house was on a hill and she had extremely high walls,” the post said. “The coyote had been seen on camera pacing and trying to get out, but was unable to leave. After reviewing more of the footage, she realized the animal had been there since Thursday.”

A relative met with officers to give them access to the home, and they discovered “the coyote had shut down and was just curled up on the lower level.”

The officers used a net to ensnare the coyote and used a towel to cover its head and keep it calm while they carried it from the yard to a nearby open space.

“She was very reluctant to get up, but with some encouragement she eventually popped up and trotted away into the brush, with quite the story to tell her family,” the post said.

Animal Care & Control officials reminded residents that it is currently pupping season for coyotes, so the animals are likely to display more aggressive behaviors when protecting their young.

“We have tried to place signs in areas of known dens and areas where we are receiving reports. Please pay attention to the signs in your neighborhood and choose a different route if there is a family of coyotes in the area,” officials wrote.
