The San Diego Zoo Safari Park announced the births of three bat-eared fox kits that have now started emerging from their den to greet the public.
The Safari Park, located about 30 minutes north of the San Diego Zoo, announced the kits were born recently to mother Winter and father Teddy. The sexes of the babies have not yet been determined.
“Bat-eared fox kits start to emerge from their den very early, and once they are a few months old, they will spend much of their time outside, learning to forage from their parents,” the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said in a news release.
Bat-eared foxes, native to eastern and southern Africa, are cooperative parents and remain together once their babies are born. The wildlife care team said both parents are very attentive to the babies, “and first-time father Teddy is doing a great job protecting his family.”
The species are known for their small stature and large ears, which can grow to over 5 inches tall.
