There was some unseasonable snow in San Diego when the zoo transformed its grizzly bear habitat into a winter wonderland with man-made powder.
The San Diego Zoo treated grizzly bears Scout and Montana to a “snow day” this week, using industrial snow-blowers to replicate the late spring weather they would experience in the wild.
The brother bears were rescued as cubs from an area outside Yellowstone National Park about 20 years ago.
“They and their mother repeatedly found unsecured food in human-occupied areas, creating safety risks for both bears and local communities,” the zoo said. “Their story serves as an important reminder that properly storing food and securing trash in bear country helps protect both people and wildlife.”
They were brought to the San Diego Zoo in 2007.
