A German man assembled 65,000 Lego bricks into the shape of a bratwurst and bun to break the Guinness World Record for the largest Lego brick sausage.
Tommy Schmidt, 45, said the idea for the unusual project came from sausage producer Die Thüringer.
“I have always enjoyed taking on unusual challenges. When the meat and sausage producer Die Thüringer from my region approached me with the idea of building something out of LEGO, we started developing the concept together. It quickly became clear to us that it had to be something big,” he told the record-keeping organization.
He said the record attempt paid tribute to his home region.
“In my home region of Thuringia in Germany, the bratwurst is a local specialty that has since become known around the world. Together with the meat and sausage producer Die Thüringer we wanted to create a tribute to the famous bratwurst and to our region,” Schmidt said.
He said it took a total of about a year to complete the project, including six months for the construction phase.
The finished model, a bratwurst with a bun and a line of mustard on top, officially claimed the record with a length of 6 feet and 6.7 inches long.
Schmidt’s sausage is now on display at Die Thüringer’s headquarters.
“{Transporting it, however, was a major challenge. Because of its size and weight, we needed many helpers to move everything safely. From the very beginning, I had to plan the model in such a way that it would fit through our large patio door,” he said.
