The Outsiders, Crash and There’s Something About Mary icon Matt Dillon is set to star in and executive produce a new MGM+ series based on the classic western, The Magnificent Seven.
Production is slated to begin this year in Calgary.
Set in the 1880s American frontier, the drama was written and is being executive produced by Tim Kring whose credits include Heroes, Touch, Dig and Crossing Jordan.
Dillon will play the role of Chris Adams, which Yul Brynner originated in the 1960 film, which was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.
Adams is the leader of seven gunslingers who try to protect a group of innocent villagers from the ruthless land baron stealing their property.
“Matt Dillon brings extraordinary depth and gravitas to this iconic role,” Michael Wright, global head of MGM+, said in a statement Wednesday. “His ability to portray complex, morally conflicted characters makes him the perfect choice to lead our re-imagining of The Magnificent Seven. This series honors the legacy of the original film while exploring timeless themes about courage, redemption, and standing up against oppression — and Matt’s performance will be at the heart of that story.”
No other casting has been announced yet.
Denzel Washington starred in a 2016 version of The Magnificent Seven, alongside Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio.
