The Portrait of a Lady will be adapted as a new PBS Masterpiece series.
PBS announced Monday that it is developing a miniseries based on the Henry James novel.
Nell Tiger Free (Servant) will star as Isabel Archer, with Gemma Arterton as Madam Merle, Jim Sturgess as Gilbert Osmond, Bill Nighy as Mr. Touchett, Miranda Richardson as Mrs. Touchett and Jack Wolfe as Ralph Touchett.
Other cast members include Calypso Cragg as Pansy Osmond, Dean-Charles Chapman as Edward Rosier, Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Henrietta Stackpole, Hugh Skinner as Lord Warburton, Hamish Frew as Casper Goodwood, Thomas Coombes as Mr. Bantling and Lydia Leonard as Countess Gemini.
The Portrait of a Lady follows Isabel (Free) as she leaves America for Old World Europe, where “she embarks on a grand journey of self-discovery, love, deception, freedom, and all that life has to offer,” according to an official description.

Originally published in 1881, The Portrait of a Lady was previously adapted as a 1954 Broadway play, a 1968 BBC miniseries starring Suzanne Neve, and a 1996 film starring Nicole Kidman.
