Neighbors use paddleboard to rescue man who fell through ice

A group of neighbors living on a Wisconsin lake used a paddleboard to rescue a man who went out onto the ice to fish and fell through.

Michael Mossman said he was at his Racine County home on Tichigan Lake when he heard a call for help outside on Saturday.

Mossman called 911 and headed out to the lake with his paddleboard.

Videos recorded at the scene captured Mossman and other neighbors using the paddleboard to reach the man and pull him out of the water.

Mossman said it was not the first time he has rescued someone from the ice.

“Stay off of this end, because it really changes by the day,” Mossman told WISN-TV.

Firefighters said the man pulled out of the water was taken to a hospital in stable condition. They said he had been wearing flotation gear when he fell through, which helped him keep his head above the water.

“The first and most important thing to keep in mind is that no ice is ever 100% safe. So, you always have to plan for the worst-case scenario if you’re going to go out on the ice,” Tichigan Fire Capt. Mike Borchardt said.
