Emu leads Maryland State Police on highway chase

Maryland State Police were called to a busy stretch of highway to wrangle an emu spotted running loose in the roadway.

Troopers from the Salisbury Barrack were summoned to the Salisbury Bypass, near the Ocean City exit, about 10:30 a.m. Saturday on a report of a massive bird running loose.

The responders engaged in an hours-long chase with the emu, which was struck by a vehicle around 1:30 p.m., but was not injured.

The emu was finally wrangled about 2 p.m. in the Pheasant Drive area by troopers wielding a dog leash.

The Australian bird was safely returned to its owner.
