The New England Wildlife Center is caring for nearly two dozen seagulls that ended up in a vat of used cooking oil on the back of a truck.

The Weymouth, Mass., facility said in a Facebook post that the gulls were apparently drawn to the truck by the smell of fried food and ended up in the vat of oil, which coated their bodies and left them unable to fly. Advertisement

A Grafton animal control officer was able to fish the birds out of the vat and bring them to the center to be treated.

“The washing process will start in the next few days once they have had a chance to de-stress and eat a good meal,” the center said. “Washing an oiled bird is an extremely labor intensive process and it can take up to an hour to wash each bird!”
