A red panda escaped from its home at a Polish zoo, sparking an hours-long search that finally came to a close in a hospital parking lot.

The Nowe Zoo in Poznań said on social media that a 9-month-old red panda named Kumari was noticed missing from its enclosure just before 2 p.m. Monday. Advertisement

“One of our red pandas has left its enclosure — most likely due to third parties damaging the security,” the post said. “We are currently conducting an intensive search.”

Reports of red panda sightings came in from all over the city, sending zookeepers scouring the streets for hours before Kumari was finally found in the parking lot of the Józef Struś Hospital.

Kumari is now in quarantine at the zoo.

“We have to admit, though, she’s extremely proud of herself,” zoo officials wrote. “She apparently really enjoyed her solo getaway.”

Zoo director Remigiusz Koziński said the damage to the panda’s enclosure appeared to be too extensive to have been the result of weather conditions or other non-human influences. The investigation into the escape is ongoing. Advertisement
