Overturned truck releases 2 million bees into Texas neighborhood

Residents of a Texas neighborhood were warned to remain indoors when a semi truck overturned and released an estimated 2 million bees into the roadway.

Orange County Emergency Services District 4 said on Facebook that the 18-wheeler overturned near the intersection of Colony Drive and FM 1130 in the Mauriceville area on Sunday.

The truck was hauling 50,000 pounds of bees — an estimated 2 million of the insects — when it overturned while making a turn.

The driver was not injured, but the area was soon swarming with escaped bees.

Queen Bee Supply posted photos showing the local beekeepers that were summoned to the scene to round up the bees and transport them to a local honey farm.

“Not something you ever want to see, but so nice to see beekeepers helping beekeepers. From commercial outfits to backyard beekeepers grateful for everyone that came out and helped,” the post said.

Orange County ESD 4 urged nearby residents to remain in their homes while the bees were rounded up.

A photographer for KFDM-TV in Beaumont was reportedly stung while capturing video of the bees.
