Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest living person and the oldest British person ever on record, celebrated her 116th birthday in Surrey, England.

Caterham was certified as the world’s oldest living person by Guinness World Records and LongeviQuest on April 30, following the death of Brazilian woman Inah Canabarro Lucas at the age of 116.

Caterham celebrated her 116th birthday on Thursday.

Her sister, Gladys Babilas, died at the age of 104 years and 78 days in 2002.

Caterham outlived both of her own daughters, but has three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

A spokesperson for the care home where Caterham lives said she would not be giving any interviews for her birthday, opting to instead spend the day celebrating with her family. The representative said Caterham would make an exception if King Charles called.

Caterham, who holds the Guinness World Records for the oldest living person, oldest living woman and oldest British person ever, was once asked for the secret to her long life by the Salisbury Journal.

“Say yes to every opportunity because you never know what it will lead to. Have a positive mental attitude and have everything in moderation,” she said.
