A Macaw parrot named Baby is back home with his owners after flying away during a camping trip in the Chicago suburbs.
Jonathan Medina said the parrot flew off during a camping trip at Bullfrog Lake in Palos Hills over the weekend, and the family urged local residents on social media to keep an eye out for the colorful, non-native bird, who still had his leash attached.
“People have been helpful on Facebook and some apps, neighborhood watch, they have spotted him but by the time they get a hold of us he’s already flown again,” Medina told NBC Chicago.
Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, a local rescue group, received a report Tuesday that a Macaw had been seen eating an apple atop a Willow Springs resident’s car.
“At first Baby was up on the roof and we were thinking maybe there’s nothing we could do, but they told us she got an apple out, she kinda lured him off the roof in her apartment complex,” rescue director Annette Prince said. “Baby was sitting on somebody’s car chomping on an apple and she grabbed the chain so she was holding on to it.”
Medina and his family were safely reunited with their nearly 9-year-old pet.
“It’s excitement you know, joy, happiness that finally he was found and brought to the people here to save him for us, instead of him being out in the wild and scared,” Medina said.
