A fireball seen breaking into pieces over Wisconsin and other Midwestern states is believed to have been a satellite reentering the atmosphere.
The American Meteor Society received more than 60 reports of a fireball in the sky Tuesday night over Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Advertisement
No meteor showers were expected around the time of the sighting.
Astronomer Jonathan McDowell said on social media that the fireball was most likely the Starlink-5693 satellite reentering the atmosphere.
There were no reports of any satellite pieces making contact with the ground, and experts said it likely burned up completely upon reentry.
