The driver of a South Western Railway train in England said he initially thought he was being pranked when he heard there was a crab sitting in first class.
Railway officials said on social media that passengers on the London to Portsmouth train spotted the small crab sitting on its own seat in first class.
“On a recent SWR journey one of our drivers, Mark, was approached by a polite customer who said: ‘Excuse me driver, there’s a live crab on the seat over there and it’s been there since I got on at Guildford,'” the post said.
Driver Mark Walsh said he initially thought someone was playing a joke on him, but he soon confirmed there was indeed a live crustacean commuter.
Walsh escorted the crab off the train at the Portsmouth and Southsea station.
“Some people were quite concerned because I was walking around the station with a crab in my hand, but most people didn’t bat an eyelid,” Walsh told the BBC.
The driver relocated the crab, which he named Craig, to a local pond.
He said it remained a mystery how the crab managed to end up in a first class seat.
“I don’t know if it fell out of a fisherman’s bag or it could be some young people having a laugh, but what I can’t understand is that it came from London,” he said.
