900-pound horse rescued from Virginia swimming pool

Firefighters in Virginia came to the rescue of an approximately 900-pound horse that fell into a resident’s swimming pool.

The Prince William County Fire & Rescue System said on social media that crews were dispatched to a home on Burwell Road in Nokesville last week on a report of a horse trapped in a pool.

“Apparently, sometime during the night, the homeowner’s horse had wandered into the pool area, stepped onto the canvas-covered pool, and fallen in,” the post said.

The owner found the horse standing in about 4 feet of water in the shallow end of the pool.

A large animal rescue team from the Little Fork Volunteer Fire and Rescue was called for assistance.

The rescuers built a ramp in the water and outfitted the horse with a harness so it could be pulled up the ramp to dry land.

“Before moving the horse, veterinarians on scene administered a mild sedative to keep the animal calm during the rescue,” officials wrote. “Once out of the pool, the horse was walked to a nearby barn/stable for further assessment by the veterinarians, ensuring there were no immediate signs of injuries or distress.”
